If you aren’t already planning on seeing James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar movie, you are already missing out. For those wondering, this movie has nothing to do with the kids show on Nickelodeon and Cameron has the rights to the name Avatar because his script existed long before the show did. With that said, critics are getting excited about this film – more excited than I have seen critics get in a long time. Saying things like “the James Cameron we know and love”, critics are already praising both the visual beauty and compelling storytelling of this motion picture.
The story is a classic story of humanity – we find a blooming, lush moon orbiting a gas giant, full of life. The moon is called Pandora, and it happens to be occupied by a race of ten foot tall huminoid-like creatives called the Navi. The premise of the story is that main character and disabled Marine Jake (played by Sam Worthington) is one of the first to try out the experiemental “Avatar” system: because human beings cannot breathe Pandorian air, we of course have genetically engineered a human/navi hybrid controlled by a mental link called an “Avatar”.
For those unfamiliar with online message boards, an ‘avatar’ is the little 100 pixel image that represents your user on the message board. Well, these hybrids are what represent humans on this planet. They are like transformers on another planet, biological “robots” controlled by humans mentally, kind of like the Matrix.
Basically, Jake gets in with the Navi and finds their life is much more suited to him than life on earth. Soon enough, hero humanity tries to invade and plunder the planet and Jake finds himself on the wrong side of the battlelines. Of course there is a romance involved too, with a beautiful Navi female that Jake is fond of.
This film is looking to have some of the most stunning special effects to date, and Cameron developed proprietary 3D technology which has been in the making for the past four years, just for this film. That’s right – the film will be in completely immersive 3D and is planning on absolutely blowing audiences away. Do you think James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar film is going to be the next big blockbuster?
